Strong Connect Four play comes from controlling useful spaces, seeing threats early, and planning more than one move ahead.
1. Prefer the centre
The centre column participates in more possible winning lines than an outside column. Early centre control gives your discs more ways to connect.
2. Check every threat
Before making your move, ask whether your opponent can win on their next turn. Blocking an immediate line always comes first.
3. Build two threats at once
A double threat gives you two winning moves on your next turn. Because your opponent can block only one, the other remains open.
4. Watch the landing squares
A tempting empty space may not be playable yet. Count how many discs must sit beneath it, and consider who will be forced to fill those spaces.
5. Avoid helping your opponent
Every disc changes which higher spaces become available. Do not place the supporting disc that lets your opponent land on a winning square.
6. Look diagonally
Diagonal threats are easier to overlook because they grow across several columns. Scan both diagonal directions after every move.
7. Learn from quick rematches
Replay openings and change one decision at a time. Short rematches make it easier to recognise the move that changed the position.
