Control the centre
The centre column participates in more possible winning lines than an outside column. Competing for the middle gives you more ways to build horizontal and diagonal threats.
Block immediate wins
Before every move, check whether the computer already has three connected discs with an open fourth space. Block that space unless you can win immediately yourself.
Create two threats
A fork gives you two different winning moves on the next turn. The computer can block only one, so planning a fork is one of the strongest ways to finish a round.
